Buprenorphine is an opioid medication, prescribed for pain that is resistant to other simple pain killers. The transdermal patch applied in skin releases this medication in to blood very slowly and continously round the clock. It takes 8-12 hours to start working. With smaller doses, the patch lasts for seven days. Whereas, for higher doses, patch needs to be changed every three days. Confirm clearly regarding this from your pharmacist or G.P. before use.

It should be applied in an intact skin on a relatively hairless site. Change the site of application every time. Do not expose the patch to extreme heat.

Side-effects: Nausea, constipation, dry mouth, sleepiness, confusion, tiredness. If you feel drowsy, you should not drive and avoid operating machinery. Usually, side effects settle with time.

Opioid medication has significant long-term problems and should be used only with caution. Opioids could become a problem rather than solution if not appropriately used. These medications should be used only under supervision. If a trial has not helped, it should be gradually withdrawn.
