Dr Thanthullu Vasu graduated in India in 1993 and then did postgraduate training in anaesthetics and pain relief. He did anaesthetic registrar training in Wales, where he developed a special interest in chronic pain management. He did a one-year advanced pain fellowship programme in London deanery and during this time, he worked in Whipps Cross University Hospital and St Bartholomews Hospital. He works as a Consultant in Pain Medicine in University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. He has been a Consultant in NHS since 2006.

 During his training in London, he specialised in interventional pain blocks. He gained the prestigious Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice diploma offered by the World Institute of Pain through cadaver-based examination. He has organised the North Wales Pain Forum meetings in the past and the scientific session of the Welsh Pain Society meeting in 2007. He was the Lead for the Chronic pain team in North Wales in 2009/10 and in Leicester in 206-2018; he was the Local Pain Medicine Education Supervisor for the trust from 2007 to 2012. 

 Dr Vasu was an elected Council Member for the British Pain Society for the term 2009-2014 and a member of the Communications Committee and the Science and Research committee of the British Pain Society in the past. He was a member of the Research Ethics Committee for the North Wales - West from 2009 to 2012. He was a Council Member of the Welsh Pain Society from 2009-2012. He was the editor of Pain News, the official newsletter of the British Pain Society from 2011-2014. He was also one of the founding editors of POEN, the e-newsletter of the Welsh Pain Society.

 

He specialises in variety of chronic pain conditions in adults including spinal pain (back/ neck), widespread pain including fibromyalgia, chronic regional pain syndrome, neuropathic pain, abdominal/ visceral pain, chronic headaches, shoulder, knee, hip pains and other painful conditions. He does a variety of interventions and injections for pain conditions. His particular interest is in radiofrequency denervation injections for back and neck pain. He has experience in variety of pain injections, which he has performed in the NHS for more than 15 years as a Consultant. He has a theatre based list for injections in NHS every week as well as non-X-ray injection list every week. He practises in Spire Hospital in Leicester.

Dr Vasu has special expertise in managing pain and fatigue in Long COVID Syndrome. He has written the first international evidence-based textbook on this condition and is a national expert in this condition.

Dr Vasu has written five textbooks that are well appreciated. He has written textbook on Fibromyalgia and is invited nationally to lecture in this condition.

He is an international and national invited lecturer in various specialities of chronic pain. He chaired/ led the Association of Anaesthetists pain workshop in their Winter Scientific Meeting in 2012. He has chaired the National Pain Exchange Meeting in 2015. He has been a Judge for the National Grunenthal Pain Awards for innovation and excellence in the past. He is  the organiser of the Annual Midlands pain forum in Leicester. He has published many scientific articles in esteemed journals in pain and has authored many chapters in various textbooks in pain. He has authored the Pain chapter in the Royal College of Surgeons CCrISP manual.

He has lectured in many patient forums and groups including the Marvellous Medicine lecture in Leicester (2016, 2021), Bangor Science Cafe (2010) and Yns Mon Fibromyalgia group (2011).
