Medications are a part of the multimodal management plan in severe persistent pain. The aim is to improve the quality of life; if the medicine does not do that after an adequate trial, it is wise to stop it rather than continuing! Some of the medications used in treatment of chronic pain include:

* Simple analgesics like Paracetamol and Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory agents.

* Weak opioids like codeine, dihydrocodeine, tramadol etc.

* Stronger opioids like oxycodone, morphine etc.

* Opioid patches like fentanyl and buprenorphine.

* Antidepressants which help nerve type of pain like Amitriptyline.

* Anticonvulsants which help nerve type of pain like Gabapentin, Pregabalin etc.

* Local anaesthetics like lignocaine.

* Other medications.
