Tramadol is a pain killer occassionally used in management of chronic pain. It belongs to opioid group of medications. It also acts on serotonin pathway to modulate pain.

The usual dosage is once every six hourly maximum in standard preparations.

Side-effects: Drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, confusion, sweating. If you feel drowsy, you should avoid driving or operating machinery. It is best to avoid alcohol. It can reduce the seizure threshold, especially at higher doses.

Medications can become a problem and care needs to be taken to assess whether it helps to improve quality of life. If it does not help, steps should be taken to stop it.
