Vocabulary is a collection of words used in a language.
Vocabulary is words we need to know to understand what we hear and the words we read to communicate with others.
There are different forms of vocabulary- reading vocabulary, writing vocabulary, listening vocabulary, and speaking vocabulary.
When teaching vocabulary to ELL students it is important to teach them through the meaning of basic words, using the student's first language especially when the language cognates with English, and providing sufficient reinforcement to support the student. The Dale-Chall List is a resource that provides a list of basic words.
Standard 3.VA.3- Identify and use a range of strategies to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words.
The students will be divided into 2 teams. Two students will go to the buzzer and will be given a definition in which the first person to hit the buzzer will answer with a vocab word. If the student who hits the buzzer first takes longer than 15 seconds or gets the vocab word wrong, the other student will have a chance to respond with the correct vocab word. If both students get the answer wrong or take too long, then there will be two new students from the teams come up and try to respond with the correct answer. The team with the most points win.
