ELL stands for English Language Learner, which refers to a student whose primary language is not English. Another term that is commonly used for ELL is ESL, which stands for English Second Language. These students come from various backgrounds and can vary in the native language they speak. They may face learning challenges due to a language barrier. in 2017, the National Center on Education stated, "5 million public school students (10.1%)are English language learners (ELL )". This data shows a significant number of ESL students in classrooms, and the numbers are growing. It is important to use cognates to bridge the gap between the English Language and other languages. The article, Using Cognates to Develop Comprehension by Colorín Colorado states, "30-40% of all words in English have a related word in Spanish". You can incorporate cognates into instruction through independent reading and read-alouds by having Spanish-speaking students write down words they hear in the text that sound familiar and write the Spanish word beside it.
