Phonological Awareness refers to the ability to understand and examine the sound structure in speech.
Phonological awareness prepares students for later reading instruction and analysis.
The most common barrier to learning reading skills when student's are young is not fully comprehending phonological awareness.
Phonological Awareness is used to understand the meaning of what is said not to understand the sounds in the speech.
The instructor will read a Dr.Suess book to the class. There will be picture cards with various images chosen from the book. Students will pick two cards that rhyme and sound them out loud. Example: cat, and hat. The students will share their cards and the rhymes in a think-pair-share. After the activity we will sing a rhyming song as a class to emphasize the rhymes and reinforce the concept.
