Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify, think about, and work with individual sounds (phonemes) in a spoken word.
Students can model phonemic awareness through
blending
segmenting
deleting
adding
which are all ways to manipulate words
Rhyming and alliteration games, books, and activities are all great teaching methods that engage students and enhance student's phonemic awareness.
Encourage student's curiosity about language and let them get experience and experiment with it. Allow for individual differences
Students will be given a word in which they have to find a rhyming word. Example: “I am thinking of an animal that rhymes with big. What’s the animal?” Answer: pig. What else rhymes with big? (dig, fig, wig)
