F. Public Comment
Not on the agenda
2 parents - Speaking on behalf of parents to propose LMS adopt soccer as a school sanctioned sport for boys and girls starting in 7th grade - starting in the spring. No conflict with Strikers’ schedule.
ME - do you know how many would be interested?
AT- Several are interested
ME - how would it impact club soccer club?
(I was unable to hear anything after this and had to leave the meeting on Zoom and come back in; the conversation was over regarding middle school sanctioned soccer. I came back into to Taylor Jacobs speaking about the standards based grading conference)
2. Programs-Reports-Presentations
A. Board Member Reports
Share of experience of the standards based grading conference that board members attended and what was learned to bring back to communicate with parents. Got feedback and want to have an action plan.
BB - asking specific questions about SBG and accountability and are we measuring things that are important in society? There doesn’t seem to be consequences with inactions (tardiness and not completing work on time). Spoke about Dual enrollment and the different expectations of college professors. Worried that how we are implementing SBG is not the best way to implement it.
Johnny Horton addressing the consequences at the middle school. The SBG conference was his first SBG conference. He believes that the conversation with the board and admin should continue, the conference focused on how academics, timeliness and other work behaviors should be graded differently - only academics should be held for achievement grades and the other behaviors should be handled differently. Spoke about layers of consequences for the variety of behaviors. They should be reported but not in the same way as achievement scores. Behavior should not impact the achievement grade. Achievement and responsibility grades are reported out on report cards at the school. Most growth is communicated at parent teacher conferences.
JK - responsibility grade separate from achievement grade, does it affect their GPA?
NO.
JK - if a student graduates with a 4.0 but a really low responsibility grade, they graduated at a high achievement?
JH - yes, but it also occurred in the percentage based system.
Student rep to the board talked about her responsibility grade.
BB - the responsibility grade doesn’t affect the achievement grade, this is the problem he has with the system.
D. Meyer - if they are chronically not achieving a good responsibility grade, they will go into tier 2 or 3 supports that are in place and are shared in a presentation. Answers to the questions are in the LVHS handbook and on her website, they are buried but they are there. It would be good to hash this out with admin in a non-public forum and get out information to parents. Standards based learning v. standards based reporting. What they learn, and how it is measured. The behavior and the achievement are two separate items, the behavior is not measured in the standard that is being taught and measured and that behavior shouldn’t affect that grade.
JK - in the presentation I would like to see why responsibility isn’t one of our standards.
—--------
ME - attended curriculum committee meeting with middle school team. Looking at data from over a number of years looking for patterns. Amazed at the astuteness of FCSD#1 staff to pull out information that is relevant.

B. Student Board Rep Reports
The Valley singers sang at WLRC for the ribbon cutting the Governor attended. Swimmers did a great job. Hello Dolly is going to be put on by LVHS drama.

B. Approve LMS Outdoor Recreation Club
Information is posted about what the club is going to do. Recommendation is to approve. All activities are covered under the insurance as long as it is approved by the board. The middle school purchased many mountain bikes for the enrichment class during the day. Mr. Babb wants to get students out on the trails.
ME - is this going to be developed with student feedback.
JH - that would certainly be the intent and the hope that I would have that the club would go. There is a lot of interest among the students and to continue to expand.
TJ - what does this look like regarding transportation?
DB - it would come down to availability. If they need to go somewhere that transportation is needed they will need to check with availability.
BB - is there any expense to the district?
DB - there is not.
No more discussion

BB - why are we not using DRC?
DB - It is up and running and staffed. The vast majority of students will go to the district DRC. Some may need to go to the county DRC.
BB - that clarifies what I was wondering.
ME - How do students keep up with other classes like choir?
