5. Discussion Items
Subject A. LMS advanced math
This item was tabled from the August 16 meeting.
M.E. spoke to community members and students who feel they just don’t get challenged at the middle school. Some students can go to the high school for exposure to more advanced math. Is there too much repetition from 8th grade math to high school? Are we providing opportunities to meet students where they are?
Discussion
Barker - there are opportunities for acceleration, need to make it more known and give them the opportunity to demonstrate their ability. And alignment from 6-12
Morton - there is a system in place where students can test into the next grade level of math. Discussion with High School in regards to social emotional readiness. LMS has a math counts team that was successful last year as an opportunity for more acceleration. Data last year indicated those in the advanced math in prior WYTOPP, stayed in the advanced math - few ever drop out of the advanced category. Other middle schools in the state do not allow a skip of 6th grade. Issues ran into were staffing, numbers of students that meet the criteria for each grade level (one might have more than another). Other schools avoid the wording of accelerated math and call it Algebra 1. Process was refined last year to move up a grade level. Accelerated math went away when standards based grading was adopted.
Math counts available during the saber enrichment/intervention block.
M.E. we need that challenge in a math class, not in addition to. How has standards based grading helped?
Morton: It is a challenge to differentiate the instruction. Ms. Reid and Mr. Sixbey showed great growth in their numbers the previous year. LMS follows and tracks STAR and WYTOPP to measure growth with teachers and standards. It is always a challenge to meet that need for those most advanced students. It takes a lot of creativity and staffing to meet those needs. If we want to do it next year, we need to start planning it now, especially to keep the equity for all students.
Subject B. Policy (1st reading)
5. Discussion Items Type Discussion
Policy Review
1) EB - Safety Program
2) EBAA - Notification of Pesticide Application on or Within School Buildings
3) EBAB - Hazard Materials
4) EBB - First Aid and Safety Procedures
5) EBBD - CPR/First Aid/AED Training
6) EBC - Emergency Plans
T.N. brought up concern about ALICE training and CPR training through the red cross.
T.J. next meeting could we have un update about the safety plans regarding suicide and other safety concerns that are in place in the district.
Crosswalk and safety
TS went to city council office with officer Conilogue, members of WYDOT and others to talk about the intersection where the accident occurred
Education - literature to educate students and parents as to protocols for pedestrian and traffic safety
Engineering
TS to draft a letter for a request for an audible signal to add to the intersection to help with kids' awareness.
For the short term there are grant applications for safe routes to school, currently waiting for an application that should be awarded in October
Visit to pay someone to do a crosswalk duty at that intersection. Look first in the district and then potentially outside of district
WYDOT is going to look at the timing of the intersection as well as what is on the ground for visibility.
WYDOT to continue studying the intersection and to continue having meetings.
Another letter to WYDOT for a change of use for an access point
Police will continue to enforce jaywalking and traffic violations in that area at those times.
It is being continually looked at.
Public comment:
Jennifer Butler: 5 children in the district, 3 kids who use that intersection every day. Organized Lander walk with crossing guards that are currently standing on the corner. Not doing background checks currently. Requesting that the school district take action for having a crossing guard starting at 7:15. Quoted WYDOT policy for school routes. Since the last review in 2020 there have been more pedestrians since the 2021 bus route changes. May need more checkpoints and more crossing guards as looking forward to safe travel routes.
TJ - can volunteer through the LOR foundation website. Need to think further into the future, but should consider background checks and having it as a paid position.
ME - Is there a time frame for the audible signal?
TS - unsure, will write the letter tomorrow. Sounded like they could get it pretty readily, but will see.
ME - thank you to TS for sitting in this group for this conversation. We as a community know these difficult corners, the district needs to be in charge of these and take this on.
TS - timing for crossing guards has been discussed, 7:00am - 8:15
