We plan to offer a one-week work placement or experience scheduled for the First Term of Year 11. This placement/experience can be done in one of three ways:
The school can use our work experience partners the Education Business Partnership (EBP) to help us secure a work placement for your young person to access independently.
Parents/carers can secure a work placement for your young person to access independently.
The young person can come to school that week and be involved in group visits to work places. This provision is for those who are not quite ready for an independent placement.
Please discuss these options with your young person. Before making your choice, please bear in mind that it has been somewhat problematic finding work places willing to support since the Covid Pandemic. We have found greater success when the family/carers have been involved in securing a placement (Option 2). It can be very beneficial for the young person if they already know something about the placement or someone at the placement, resulting in lowered anxiety.
We try to arrange placements that are close to your home town so that it is easier for the young person to travel. This typically means that your normal/KCC transport arrangements cease for this week and it will be the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that their young person arranges suitable transport to and from their work placement. It is also parents/carers responsibility to inform their KCC transport that they will not be required this week.
There can be a great deal of flexibility around the working hours of the placements depending on the young person and the type of placement they have. With this in mind, it is important to be aware that the young person will not be expected in school around their work placement hours for this week.
This option is for those who are not quite ready for an independent placement. The young people would come to school as normal on their normal transport but will follow a different timetable in that they will visit a range of different work placements to experience what a work place looks and feels like. This will be done in a group with the support of school staff.
