" A standalone, semi-open structure for users to experience a romanticized story about a typical rainforest in Malaysia through different spatial qualities and typologies, creating meaningful and engaging experiences. "
Project 1 is a group project with an individual component. In groups of eight (8) students, the task is to romanticize a rainforest and translate it into an intriguing narrative that will then be transformed it into two (2) individual standalone Poetic Journey Structure. Students are required to come up with one narrative which will then transform one as a concentric journey structure and one as a linear journey structure,
In this assignment, linear and concentric organization was chosen. It has extended my explorations into designing a structure with meaning, a purpose, and its own poetic experience. Such design is achieved through the research of several works from architects in which form our analysis of our precedents study.
The “study area” for Project 2 is Kampung Janda Baik and the specific area will be along Jalan Sumsum Hilir and Jalan Kampung Janda Baik. Two specific, dedicated sites have been selected for students to design the discovery center. My site will be Site B at Tapak KOBAIK next to Pasar Mini Daily Fresh " Fz Pasar Segar 2 “. The assignment is to design a discovery center for the selected site to reflect upon their genius loci and understandings of the identity of the place from the analysis made through the 3 days 2 nights site visit.
In this project, I am able to explore the depth behind the rich history of Janda baik by connecting not only with the people, but the place as well. Sustainability was introduced through passive design strategies, and spaces were specifically placed for certain functions . Poetic experiences were created through geometry and the modifying elements of light and shadow, materiality and texture. A big site with a maximum of 450sqm built-up area, benefits me in how to utilize each spaces efficiently with the addition of natural landscaping and facilities for the disabled.
