On-Site Laboratory

Kyoto University On-Site Laboratory program  in Makerere University

"Center for Advanced Genetics Field Science"

On-site Laboratory means locally operated laboratory, by collaboration with overseas universities and research institutes.

Currently, 10 on-site laboratories are certified at Kyoto University. The Center for Advanced Research in Genetics and Ecology, which was established at Makerere University in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, in 2019, was the first on-site lab outside of Asia and North America.

Kalinzu Forest is an important satellite hub of the Center.

The purpose of this research center is to "promote field research and genetic research", "recruit excellent young researchers and students from Uganda, Japan, and the world" and "cultivate graduate students with an international sense"

Currently, due to the CITES and the Convention on Biological Diversity, biological resources such as DNA samples is not easy to take out of the country. It is a great advantage to be able to analyze DNA and hormone samples obtained non-invasively in the Kalinzu forest at this center of Makerere University.

In 2019, we invited Makerere University technician and Master course student to Kyoto University to learn DNA analysis. In future, we will promote international exchange not only between Kyoto University and Makerere University, but also students and researchers from other countries in Europe, the United States and Africa.
