To what extent is it ethical for parents to monitor the online activities of their children?
Parents’ right to control over their children’s online activities can result in some positive impacts yet can also violates basic ethics.
Positive: protect children’s mental health. there are bad factors in the digital world that deliver disturbing content and false information. Without parents’ control, children can get scammed on the internet and get exposed to inappropriate images because children might be lack of experience and do not know the harms that can impact them. Also, the issue of cyberbullying occurs commonly due to free speech, which can lead to the child’s mental issue. There are many cases in Korea that teenagers in high school use aggressive language to attack and spread a target’s sensitive information that has lead to the victim’s depression and suicide. Therefore, it’s necessary for parents to be aware of their children activities to prevent negative impacts and address to the issue as soon as possible
Negative: besides the positive impacts, this type of thing violates one of the most basic human rights since parents can access their children personal preferences and chat boxes, making the them uncomfortable. We can clearly see in the asian culture that parents are more strict when managing children’s screen time which has caused the motivation to lie + another account to hide away from the parents.
In my opinion, parents should take part to monitor where their children visit online because the children are too young to be responsible and aware of the potential dangers on the digital world, therefore guardian play an important role to help guide younger users. Very famous study case is the girl who got eating disorder because of thinfluencer on the internet. If parents have realized the strange thing/habit. They could’ve helped and saved the girl earlier .
