J: which apps are your favorite ways of coomunicating with others?
P: I usually use Messenger and Instagram as my two main apps to communicate with other people. The form of communication is usually video calling and texting.
J: why do you choose to use these various forms?
P: I choose to video call a lot since I believe it is a very quick way to communicate and discuss something with other people. Also, it allows me to go into deeper and more detailed discussions that sometimes texting might take too long to do so. Texting is a very convenient way to communicate especially when the person is not available for calls and it also gives them and myself time to think about the answer carefully.
J: describe how you use them for thinking, communicating, collaboration and creation
P: I would use either texting or video calling to communicate with my family and friends to tell my stories within the day or to ask them questions that I have. Video calling is also very helpful for group work, it allows me to have an almost face to face conversation and to work as a team while we are far apart.
J: explore how they are different from previous pre-digital forms of communication and expression, such as letters, books, passive TV, radio and movies
P: These forms of communication take much less time compared to sending letters, it takes less time to send and receive a response. It also allows us as users to have more control over what we are reading, watching or interacting with since we can search for what we want.
J: what are some of the negative and positive impacts and implications, for you and others?
P: They help me to keep in touch with people who are physically far away from me like now when I am still able to communicate with my friends and family back in Hanoi while I move to HCMC to study. However, they are very distracting to me. I often get carried away and end up using my phone for an hour without realizing it.
J: do you operate in a media echo chamber? How diverse are your news and information sources? what are the impacts and implications of being a media echo chamber?
P: No, I don't operate in a media echo chamber. Because when I interact with a new interesting piece of information, I would usually search about it more on google, tiktok to see the whole story of the information. I think even within my friend group, we have different perspectives and opinions on things and we would usually discuss that. Media echo chamber will most likely have very negative impacts on a person since they don’t get to interact with a different perspective. This takes away their critical thinking skill, their objectivity and persuasion skill although they might give them a sense of belonging to a community.
