Purdue Extension-Wabash County
Greetings All,
July is here and that means it is 4-H Fair Season!! The projects are looking great and I can't wait to see all the animals and kids showing off all their hard work. The Wabash County 4-H Fair runs from July 13-19, information can be found on the link below. There will be another Adult Planter Competition at the fairgrounds during the fair, so if you'd like to show off your stuff sign up here: https://forms.gle/46UkkjBNx1QGtX5L7 . The Planter Competition is under Division 5- Horticulture. Drop off times are July 11th from 9:00am-12:00 pm. Please reach out if you have any questions. We've had great entries in the past and hope to keep up the tradition to make the fairgrounds beautiful.
Farmers have been watching crops as we experienced high temperatures in the middle of June with little to no rainfall. We will see what July brings, hopefully we will get the precipitation needed to keep the crops healthy and growing. There has been some disease pressure in corn, we'll see if tar spot rears its head this summer. A big cause for this disease is water retention/moisture on the leaves throughout the heat of the day. I hope you all have a great 4th of July and be sure to come visit us at the county fair.
If you have any questions about upcoming programming or Ag questions in general, feel free to reach out to the Extension Office. I will be in and out of the office for both work and vacation in July, if you'd like to set up a meeting or get ahold of me email is the best option.

Best Wishes,

June Review
The 4-H Fair takes up a lot of our time during the summer, but we also hold programs for mini-4-h, Spark Clubs, summer school and much more. It is nice to work with kiddos outside the classroom to help them expand their horizons. Here we were fortunate to partner with Heartland Career Center and make wooden vase holders for the youth to take home.
Current Master Gardeners had a lesson on plant propagation and shared what projects they were working on in the area.
Students got to plant flowers in the planter boxes they made earlier that morning.
The mini 4-H youth build and decorated plater boxes for an activity during our mini 4-H day.
Part of our summer educational series is visiting the SPARK Club groups. We covered leaves and insects in my session.
A community member and I looked at a parcel of property along the bike trial in Lagro. The difficulty is figuring out what to do on such a steep slope.
All 18 participants in the Spring 2024 EMG basic training passed their final. I'm excited to see what they will bring tot he community.
Neat site that I saw when visiting family at Lake of the Ozarks.
I was asked to speak on native soils for the Master Naturalist Class. We took samples, looked through maps and covered the basics of our Indiana soils.
