Purdue Extension-Wabash County
We would like to congratulate Diane Randall and Sarah Morbitzer, from the North Manchester Public Library, as the 2023 Friends of Extension Award Recipients!! In the past 3 years our extension office has grown from 0 to 15+ programs annually in partnership with the library. This includes all 3 of our program areas (4-H, ANR, and HHS) for both adult and youth audiences. Thanks for all you do for the community and here's to a great 2024!!
Greetings All,
We've made it to December! Harvest is done for most folks and winter is on its way. I don't have any numbers, but let's just say that farmers reaction to yields was as varied as the soil types we have in Wabash County. I'm glad it was a safe season and if you get a moment, be sure to thank a farmer! This time of year I am working as best I can on planning for the 2024 season, all while squeezing in a few educational programs. There is one more "Extension Hot Topics" webinar scheduled for December 21 at noon, we will taking an in-depth look at the ever-present spotted lantern fly with Bob Bruner. See other events below. I will be out of the office intermittently for conferences and vacation in December, if you'd like to make an appointment feel free to call the office or send me an email (gschortg@purdue.edu), email would probably be your best bet.
As always, If you have any questions feel free to reach out to the Extension Office and leave your name, phone number and e-mail address.
Phone: 260-563-0661 (Ext 1408) or emailing me directly at gschortg@purdue.edu

November Review
Here I am with Co-ANR Extension Educators from Area 8 working behind the scenes to produce our monthly Extension Hot Topics Webinar. The purpose of this series is to expose new extension educators and the public to state specialists from campus and other professional circles to help inform folks on the research and findings in our state.
Pictured is an experiment set up to determine how to best control an herbicide resistant population of Broadleaf Plantain. Broadleaf plantain is a perennial lawn weed that has a waxy leaf and is difficult to control in most situations. The goal is to figure out the best method to approach when encountering herbicide resistant weed populations and then post that in scientific journals.
Building a grow tower with the North Manchester Home School Science Group!
Each year we have an annual meeting to showcase what our team has accomplished in the past year and to communicate upcoming programs with our stakeholders. We had representatives for; 4-H, ANR, HHS, Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, Upper Wabash Invasives Network, Chester Champs, NEPA, CWC, 4-h Junior Leaders and others. We had a great crowd and some great ideas were tossed around.

This group of high schoolers are always a great help in the community gardens. We did some Weed ID as we were cleaning up the raised beds.
