Wabash County
Garden Prep at a local church!
Dandelions are starting their spring bloom.
Greetings Everyone,
April was a fickle month this year, but what else is new? We had snow rain, tornadoes, and drying conditions, and not in that order. I talked with farmers and it seems like folks are starting to get in the fields. However, with the rain and cold snap that ended April and began May, it seams like everyone is sitting tight for a while.
The frost free date showing up as April 30th, but I'm still a little wary to put out my annuals and potted plants. I'm also keeping my tomato plants inside until after Mother's Day. I usually grow around a dozen plants from seeds to use in the community gardens spread throughout the county.
On the warm days I've been working out at the gardens and I haven't had to use to many of the backup rain dates. In April, I completed the Indiana Master Naturalist Course. This class was excellent and covered a wide range of topics that I usually don't cover in Extension.

April Review
Pictures is Vince Harrell standing in front of the 'Space Tree' Vince planted the tree in 1989 when he was the Ag and Natural Resource Educator in Wabash County.
"To commemorate the 75th anniversary of extension, the seeds of two common Indiana tree species, the sycamore and tulip tree, growing at the Hoosier 4-H Leadership Center accompanied NASA astronaut and former Indiana 4-H'er Jerry Ross on the December 1988 flight of U.S. space shuttle ATLANTIS. Upon return from the 68-Orbit, 1.8 million mission, the seeds were delivered to Purdue University for subsequent distribution to Indiana's 92 counties. The trees from these 'seeds in space" will be planted in each county as living reminders of Extension's role in meeting the educational needs of Indiana citizens during the past 75 years and its ledge of continued service for the next 75 years"
-An excerpt from the letter presented to Wabash Extension on May 8th, 1989
I was able to visit the tree with Vince this past April. It is a great piece of history and is planted out at Asherwood forest, located in the Southwest part of Wabash County.
History was a part of the IMN Course. Here we are visiting the Center Grove Cemetery.

Checking soil temperatures for Crabgrass germination. Still needs to warm up a little bit more, picture take April 12.
Soil infiltration test with 5 different types of soil.
Ornithology was another topic for Indiana Master Naturalists.
The forsythia is blooming! It used to be said to put down crabgrass preemergent when forsythia blooms, however, the soil temperatures are a better measure on when to apply.
