Wabash County
I got the truck loaded up with soil and plants for one of my May gardening workshops.
Herbs we planted in the boxes lining Market Street Downtown.
Greetings Everyone,
I'm not going to sugar-coat it, it is dry out there. As of June 6th we've had lots of sunshine and little rain. I have categorized Wabash County as a D0-D1 drought, meaning that soil conditions are dry with little to no precipitation. Crops are in the ground and not looking too bad other than it is a bit crispy out there. According to Beth Hall, the Purdue University State Climate Specialist, there are models showing that there is a chance of precipitation for mid-June. She also mentioned that it is a little too soon to determine if we are in what is considered a "flash-drought".
Gardens are planted and things are needing some care in watering, but otherwise temperatures are down a bit from previous weeks with cool nights, let's keep our fingers crossed for rain.
I've been busy with spark clubs, mini 4-H camps and Master Gardener meetings. During May and June I try really hard to get some Ag programs in before the office officially switches into 4-H mode.
I am looking forward to hosting the 2023 Adult Planter Open Show during the Wabash County Fair, see flyer below. We will be touring the planters on Tuesday July 18th and there will be a guest speaker to talk about urban soils and taking care of raised beds.

May Review
The Tulip Poplar is the Indiana State Tree. Many folks can identify this tree by the yellow and orange 'tulip-like' flowers that show up in mid-late May. They can also be identified by their leaves which have a shape similar to what we think of as a chef's hat. These trees are quick growers and can reach a height of 70 feet tall!
Planting tomatoes with the Wabash Middle School STEM classes.
I helped with planting and cookie decorating stations.
Supplies to make planters for our open show during the county fair.
This class did a great job planting herbs in the raised beds.
We had a blender bike station for kids to make their own salsa after planting thier garden.
Installing shade plants at the North Manchester Public Library.
The Upper Wabash Invasives Network held a weed wrangle at the Mississinewa SRA. Had a great turn out and got a lot done!
Thank you to Janina Traxler for donating flagstone to create a boarder for the NMPL shade garden!
