Action Research Plan
Topic of Action Research:
The topic of my research is Flipping the Defensive Meeting room, shifting the ownership of weekly game film breakdown from Coach led to Student led.
Purpose of Study:
The purpose of the study is to determine if shifting the responsibility of game film breakdown will improve the student-athlete’s understanding of game preparation, increasing their effectiveness on the field during practices and games.
Fundamental Research Question:
Does shifting game film breakdown from Coach led to Student Athlete led improve practice and game outcome.
Research Design and Methods:
The design is quantitative, because the goal is to decrease the amount of time needed in the meeting room, increase the amount of time spent on the practice field, and decrease the number of rushing yards put on our defense.
Type of Data to be Collected:
To measure the outcome of the research question, the following data will be collected and analyzed: Number of minutes spent in defensive meeting room, number of minutes spent on practice field, number of yards given up by defense during each game, number of yards given up by special teams each game.
Measurement Instruments to be Used:
The summer meeting time versus summer field practice times will be compared to see if there is a positive change. The rushing yards from past years will be compared to rushing yards from this year against same opponents to see if there is a statistical significance to those yards.
How My Lit Review Informed My Study:
The lit review will give an overview of the benefit college students and students in college athletic programs have had by shifting the responsibility of classroom review of new information to the students by flipping the classroom, as well as the positive impact technology is having on college athletics. The main focus of the lit review will focus on student ownership of new material and information. Because there is very little research on flipping the classroom in college athletics, this research will add to the field of literature.
Time Line for:
Implementation
I hope to begin implementation of my plan in an abbreviated form in August. Our student athletes report for team workouts in late July. I will choose a couple of team leaders in the defensive backfield to work with on game film breakdown, in order to determine the best “plan of attack” for implementation. My hope would be implementing the full plan for the 2020 season.
Collecting and Analyzing Data
Because everything we do involves collecting data in the form of time of possession, yards gained and lost, and points earned and lost, for example, I will be able to utilize reports that are already in use to modify for my plan.
Developing Action Plan
I will begin working with a small number of defensive team leaders, specifically working with them on film breakdown, and what we as coaches look for as we begin game planning. I hope to choose upper classmen that have a desire to enter the coaching field as well.
Sharing and Communicating Results
In the beginning, I will communicate results to the defensive coaches during a set time in our already scheduled defensive meetings. My plan is to extend the special teams and offense as I have good data available to share with all coaches, making this a full-team plan.
Reflecting on the Process
The nature of our business as coaches and student athletes involves continuous reflection throughout the season. Our goal is continuous improvement - as long as that is happening, we feel positive. As a result, we are already set up to reflect on positives that my plan should produce, moving us closer to our goal. We have scheduled meetings, both formal and informal, throughout the year. I feel that I am in a good position to get constructive input and feedback before, during and after implementation.
