Perceptual System and Perceived World

In this module you will become familiar with the important role played by the five senses and understand the real world versus the perceived world.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate, for each of the five senses, activities that have an impact on one's life,
  • Explain, using examples, the difference between the real world and the perceived world,
  • Describe the perceptual system filters (perceived world),
  • Identify the values and beliefs from family, social, religious and other environments,
  • Explain how perception is unique to each individual,
  • Explain the meaning of the most significant words in connection with the characteristics of perception.

Reflection 1

Discuss how learning about perception in this course has impacted your understanding of the choices you have made and in regards to how you view the world.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Perception is individual and unique to everyone.

People migrate to those who share a common perception and goal.

All we can provide is information and clarity, information and clarity, to ensure that key messages are received in order to function well within any organisation.

Reflection 2

Compare and contrast what you have discovered about how your perceptions of a situation, and those of one significant other, have created misunderstandings, conflicts, or cohesiveness.

“First seek to understand, then to be understood.” Stephen R Covey

Whenever we are out in the country, Ash takes a big inhale and exhales with a, “I love that smell.”

His sensory system takes him back to his childhood experiences, growing up on a farm with the memories he has of his parents, and the fun and freedom he enjoyed as a child. His value filter is one of nostalgia and happiness which is his current perceived world.

Whenever I am out in the country, I hold my breath and stay in the car.

My sensory system takes me back to my childhood experience of puffy eyes, itchy skin and severe allergies. My value filter is one of negativity and physical distress which is my current perceived world.

We both have an understanding of our perceived worlds and accept that we see the world differently.

Reflection 3

Discuss your thoughts about how your life would have been different if one of your senses did not function normally. (i.e. blindness, deafness, no feeling in your hand etc.)
