Perceptual System and Perceived World

General Objectives

At the end this module, you will become familiar with the important role played by the five senses and understand the real world versus the perceived world.

Learning Objectives

More specifically, in this module you will:

  • Demonstrate, for each of the five senses, activities that have an impact on one's life,
  • Explain, using examples, the difference between the real world and the perceived world,
  • Describe the perceptual system filters (perceived world),
  • Identify the values and beliefs from family, social, religious and other environments,
  • Explain how perception is unique to each individual,
  • Explain the meaning of the most significant words in connection with the characteristics of perception.

Reflection Questions

  1. Discuss how learning about perception in this course has impacted your understanding of the choices you have made and in regards to how you view the world.
  2. Compare and contrast what you have discovered about how your perceptions of a situation, and those of one significant other, have created misunderstandings, conflicts, or cohesiveness.
  3. Discuss your thoughts about how your life would have been different if one of your senses did not function normally. (i.e. blindness, deafness, no feeling in your hand etc.)
