Standard 9: Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy

Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

While being in management roles, I was taught that if you want someone to follow your rules, your beliefs, and your values you have to lead by example. I believe that there is a time and a place for everything. You can be that person that people come and talk to just for them to have someone to talk to. You can also be that person that gives advice, or that person that shows leadership not because of your role but because they trust you and believe in what you believe. I was taught that you have to be the person you want them to be. If you want people to follow the rules you have to  follow them also. You have to set the examples you wan them to follow. As a professional, and a leader you can not expect to just tell people what to do. I believe in also helping or starting of what needs to be done and having the rest take over. Telling people what to do and how to do it might work once, but people tend to get tired especially when the one sending out the orders is not doing anything.
