I will have suggested which pieces to learn for your sight reading but you could also
sight read a couple of bars in a piece later in your book
sight read pieces from Supersonics Plus
Below are some tips to walk you through...
What will the BEAT FEEL like? (Clap a couple of bars to feel it.)
Any sharps or flats?
Which ? Do you need to circle them in the music to help you spot them?
Where are the jumps and steps?
Look out for the biggest jumps!
What patterns can I see? 5 notes going up. 5 notes going down, patterns that repeat - not just one bar maybe whole line?
Where are the landmark notes that I know really well? Check you are on that note when you get there. Maybe circle them to help.
HEAR the music in your head before you play - if the pattern goes up, hear the notes going up in your head.
Count in for 2 bars and KEEP SAYING THE RHYTHM - this is hard at first but gets easier if you...practise!
Find your START notes and correct FINGERS and OFF YOU GO!
Have a look at these pieces to improve your sight reading.
