This piece is based on the theme (or main tune) from Haydn's Symphony no 100. It is the FINALE (the Italian word for the end - similar to the word Final in English). Once you are familiar with your piece, listen to the Youtube Recordings - can you hear the melody? WARNING: IT IS VERY QUICK!!! Often the last movement of a symphony was fast and show-offy - to end with a bang! The theme keeps coming back throughout the FINALE - listen all the way through to end, it's not toooooo long! You should be able to hear the theme repeated lots of times.
Listen to the music LOTS and LOTS before you learn to play it.
First time: Clap the pulse /heartbeat as you listen
Second time: Follow the music in your book as you listen
Third time: Listen out for the DYNAMICS - which are the LOUD sections and the quiet sections - why do you think it changes? What effect does it have on the music? When you listen to the YouTube version of his original work, does it also change from loud to quiet in the same way?
Fourth time: Clap the rhythm as you listen.
Fifth time: Can you sing along with the melody now?
Sixth time: Can you work out some of the tune BY EAR? (without looking at the music in your book?)
Seventh time: Which of these words could you use to describe the CHARACTER of the piece?
Fun sad lively slow thoughtful joking
How do you think you can play the piece to make other people hear the same CHARACTER? (Legato (smoothly), staccato (jumpy), loudly, quietly?
FINALLY - Do you think that Haydn really wore a wig and if so, what do you think it looked like?

He was quite a joker, for example for his Farewell Symphony , he gradually wrote out the orchestra so that only a couple were left at the end - watch it here:
