While I do not believe that someone can learn obtain proficiency in a language by only using Duolingo, I do think that it provides impactful vocabulary learning and reinforcement. Duolingo for schools is really amazing in that it allows teachers to assign particular units or amounts of time to their students, as well as assess their progress. It is also free for both students and teachers. One downside is that Duolingo uses the student's L1 to teach the L2 and while they have been languages available, not all are yet. Additionally, when creating a class on Duolingo, the teacher must select the students' L1. If the teacher has a class with students from various linguistic backgrounds, she must create a number of different classes within the Duolingo system. A teacher could use this resource as outside reinforcement and practice what was learned in class. For example, the teacher might assign the students to practice the unit that focuses on greetings after teaching this vocabulary in class. This is particularly useful for novice speakers.Â
