How to use this resource:
As has been discussed in class, vocabulary is an critical to language learning. Students need vocabulary to be able to understand and produce language. However, sometimes it can be difficult to determine which vocabulary to focus on and how many words a student already knows. This resource provides a free test that students can take that will then tell you roughly how many words they know. This can help to identify a class average to determine the word list to focus on.For example, if, on average, the students knows 2000 words, the teacher knows to focus on teaching the 3000 most common word list. This can also be used to determine outliers in the class. Some students may have a much lower vocabulary knowledge than other students and need some intervention. Some students, on the other hand, might know a lot more vocabulary words than other students and will need to be challenged.
