ESL Notes
How to use this resource:
This resource provides movie guides for English language learners. Each movie guide provides a large number of words and phrases that will be encountered in the movie, separated into sections. Words and phrases can be pre-taught. Then the teacher can play the given scene and students can check off when they hear a word or phrase used. This allow students to learn new words, including casual and slang words, while also practicing listening for detail. Once students are familiar with the vocabulary words, students can also practice listening for global understanding by rewatching the scene. Obviously, movies are not the only listening students should use since they provide a lot of contextual evidence, however they can be a powerful teaching tool to add to the mix. The teacher should also be selective about the movies that are chosen based on the level of the students and purpose of the activity.

How to use this resource:
In this section, I have provided links to a number of different podcasts for English Language Learners. These podcasts can help students to learn new vocabulary and to practice their listening comprehension. Additionally, a number of the podcasts provide free online worksheets or online quizzes with comprehension questions. This can also be a good way for students to hear a variety of different accents and voices. Each podcast has a different focus so a podcast can be chosen depending on the focus and level of the students. The teacher can teach listening strategies which can be practiced as a class with the podcasts. Students could then find podcasts on topics that interest them and to practice the strategy independently.
TED Talks
How to use this resource:
Ted Talks are an excellent source of authentic language, particularily for advanced learners. Not to mention, that there are TED talks on wide range of topics of interest. Since TED Talks ressemble a university lecture in many ways, they can be a great way for students to practice note-taking skills while listening. In integrating with writing, students can also write a summary about what they understood. Writing a summary also gives students a purpose for their listening.
