I'm working on the anatomy chapter for the upcoming book "Beetles of Canada and the United States" (a.k.a. BOCUS). Working on this, I have needed to clarify several issues with terms and definitions, not only for myself, but for whoever uses that chapter to guide themselves through the content of the book.
Here I'm compiling the trickiest cases. These issues have been discussed with some colleagues, specially Dr. Richard Leschen, who is my coauthor for hat chapter.
A quote from Rich:
"We have taken anatomy for granted"
I realize I've been using the word "morphology" to mean anatomy for a while now. I need to correct that.
Luckily Snodgrass made a clear distinction about this back in 1951:
So there you have it. When dealing with a matter of interpretation, go check the facts.
