Anatomical terminology for Coleoptera has traditionally been passed down through generations via scientific literature. Students typically learn this terminology from general entomology or Coleoptera-specific textbooks, or from specialized taxonomic revisions. However, these sources often lack explicit definitions and/or clearly labeled illustrations, which can lead to misinterpretations. Additionally, many references still use outdated terms that do not reflect advances in beetle anatomy. While preparing the chapter on Coleoptera anatomy for the forthcoming book Beetles of Canada and the United States, we reviewed existing terminology to rectify and precisely define terms that are often used broadly or ambiguously, or whose meanings have been assumed by tradition rather than clearly defined. Well-supported definitions and justifications for numerous beetle anatomical terms will be provided. Standards for descriptive terms based on directional terminology, structural properties, and positional relationships within the beetle’s body, following ontological principles, will also be provided. A brief overview of the Coleoptera Anatomy Ontology will be included, emphasizing definitions in both natural and machine-readable language.
