Jacque Liu – Artist

Our Cloud. 2018. A collaborative project with Sarah Kate Burgess, commissioned by the Philadelphia International Airport as a temporary public artwork. Philadelphia, PA. 

We knew early what this piece would be – movement, light, and materials placed together to create an experience that gives one pause. From this starting point, we worked through various combinations of color, form, and scale in order to come to a simple gesture: 300 spinning pinwheels with fluorescent lights and a fan.

As our lives have become increasingly busy, we find that the most striking moments are the slow ones. To name a few: watching our son drink water, eating a meal together, staring at a field of yellow wildflowers that weren’t there last week, and watching clouds pass while sitting by the water.

Within these moments of stillness are recognitions of beauty, of meaning. We are quite fond of these experiences and actively seek them out. For this installation, our work as artists is to offer an encounter that parallels our memories of these moments.
