Through a Partnership with Major League Baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies, and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the City of Philadelphia created the Urban Youth Academy (UYA) at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, a new construction consisting of 7,300 square foot facility. UYA’s mission is to use baseball as a means of instruction and education in urban environments in order to enhance the quality of life in the surrounding communities. The UYA is the second of two sites, which together provides free year-round instruction to over 8,000 Philadelphia youths.

Mark Stockton’s Score is a site-specific public art mural that examines baseball as America’s pastime in connection with Philadelphia’s cultural history. Consisting of 40 painted portraits placed upon an abstracted musical score background, Mr. Stockton’s work “emphasizes the inter-connections of sports, art, and civic history.” Imagery includes the rise of African Americans in the Negro leagues and Professional Baseball; youth baseball, Little League, and the athletic and educational pursuits of the UYA; professional baseball in Philadelphia; and creative visionaries and civic leaders who acknowledged baseball through their work and lives.
