In Spring & Fall 2019, I co-facilitated Xavier’s Graduate Writing Boot Camp in collaboration with Dr. Amy Thierry (Public Health Sciences). This day-long workshop was designed to support graduate and doctoral students in strengthening their writing skills and successfully navigating the thesis and dissertation process. The morning session focused on the fundamentals of effective writing, while the afternoon session provided targeted strategies for academic writing and completing large-scale projects.
The boot camp attracted a diverse group of graduate students across disciplines, creating a space where academic skill-building intersected with peer support and faculty mentorship. By providing structured guidance, practical resources, and individualized feedback, the workshop not only advanced participants’ immediate writing goals but also fostered confidence in their scholarly voices.
This initiative reflects my commitment to collegiality in teaching and mentorship, as it required collaboration with faculty colleagues, cross-departmental coordination, and an intentional focus on student success. It also exemplifies my belief that faculty service should cultivate academic culture by creating opportunities where students feel supported, empowered, and connected to the larger scholarly community.
