Italian Workshop on
Shell and Spatial Structures
Pier Luigi Nervi Prize
With the endorsement of the Pier Luigi Nervi Foundation, in memory of Engineer Pier Luigi Nervi (Italy, 1891-1979), the IWSS Nervi Prize recognizes talented young researchers, designers, and engineers working in the field of shell and/or spatial structures . This recognition is achieved by selecting outstanding submissions to the Italian Workshop on Shell and Spatial Structures in the form of research papers, resumes of design projects, or presentations of innovative ideas.

Pier Luigi Nervi Prize WINNER
The Nervi Prize Commission examined submissions by 50+ young researchers and decided to assign the first Pier Luigi Nervi Prize to:
Francesco Laccone from the Institute of Information Science and Technology "Alessandro Faedo" ISTI of the National Research Council of Italy (in Pisa) for the work entitled Static- and fabrication-aware segmented concrete shells made of post-tensioned precast flat tiles.
Mentions of honor
Due to the high number of participants and the high quality of presented contributions, the Nervi prize Commission also assigned six ex aequo mentions of honor to (in alphabetic order):
Gloria Rita Argento - Isogeometric refinement for shape optimization with a tunable number of variables
Fabio Bazzucchi - Snap n roll tuning and listening to the progressive buckling of reticulated ensembles
Romane Boutillier - Topology generation of architectural meshes adapted to the support conditions
Claudia Chianese - Form-finding of membrane shells via isogeometric analysis
Marta Lembo - Nervi’s isostatic lines inspired floor slabs. Beyond the archetypal Gatti Woolen Mill in Rome
Jonathan Melchiorre - Gridshell Multi-step Structural Optimization with Improved Multi-body Rope Approach and multi-objective genetic algorithm
Criteria and Procedures for the Nervi Prize
To be considered, papers must be submitted to the IWSS23 and must be explicitly entered into the Nervi Prize Contest. Papers that have previously been submitted for publication in any Journal or presented at Conferences are not eligible for the Nervi Prize competition.

be under the age of 35 at the end of 2023;
be corresponding author and presenter of the submission to the IWSS2023;
upload the short-paper to be published on the conference proceedings within the established deadline;
attend the Workshop to present the paper in person in a dedicated session.
Presentation and Benefits
The Prize is presented during the IWSS2023. Each prize consists of:
a certificate and medal;
invitation to submit an extended and original version of the contribution to either one of the two dedicated Special Issues for possible publication;
recognition of the prize on the Pier Luigi Nervi Foundation and Advances in Engineering websites.
