Committed to Growth

The Indigenous Perspectives Conference (IPC) is now entirely planned and executed by members of the Education Undergraduate Society of Red Deer Polytechnic. The IPC is a conference created by educators, for educators. We aim to enhance the knowledge and awareness of Indigenous experiences and perspectives within our community.

Allysa Whitford

Why I Got Involved:

Aaniin/Tansi, My name is Allysa Whitford and I am in my third year of the Bachelor of Education Early Years program. This is my first time being on the committee for the IPC. I cannot wait to branch out and learn more about our Indigenous communities and teachings.

Why I Got Involved:

Hi, my name is Athena Pare, and this is my second year as a member of IPC. I am currently in my fourth year in the Middle Years Program collaboration with the University of Alberta. Even though I am excited to be a part of this experience, I recommend to those who are uncertain to at least give us a chance to share our enthusiasm with you. I have a feeling you won’t regret it.

Hey! My name is Becca Glackin and I am a first-year Bachelor of Education student at RDP. I am excited and honored to be a part of the committee for the IPC. I can’t wait to see all the different learning opportunities and advance Truth and Reconciliation in our community.

Why I Got Involved:

Hi! My name is Brooke Skrypichayko and I am a fourth- year Bachelor of Education Middle Years student in collaboration with the University of Alberta. Additionally, I play for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens! I decided to join the Indigenous Perspective Conference committee because I have Metis heritage and I wanted to learn more about my culture. I am looking forward to learning more about how I can contribute to Truth and Reconciliation.

Why I Got Involved:

Tansi. My name is Bryson Swampy and I am a first-year education major for the secondary program. This is my first year as a member of the Indigenous Perspectives Conference. I am excited to help organize this event so that I can help spread awareness for indigenous culture for everyone within the community of RDP and the city of Red Deer.

Why I Got Involved:

Hey everyone! My name is Clancy Pennock and I am currently a fourth-year education student in the Middle Years Collaborative program! This is my first year as a committee member on the IPC. I am so excited and honored to be a part of such an incredible committee and experience. I look forward to continuing my journey of reconciliation alongside my peers!

Hi! My name is Emma Mackay and I am in my third year of the Bachelor of Education Early years program here at RDP. This is my first year being on the committee for the Indigenous Perspectives Conference and I am so excited to be part of such an amazing team! Why I Got Involved:

Hey Pals! I’m Jamie Doyle. I am currently in my 4th year of The Middle Years Collaboration Program (Yay for almost being done). This is my first year as a committee member for the IPC! I am so pumped to be a part of such a fantastic conference that brings Indigenous change, knowledge, & culture to our community. This conference is such a heartwarming & inspiring experience that will make you want to do more, learn more, and be a part of more. Why I Got Involved:

Hello! My name is Janelle Aubin, and I am a fourth-year Bachelor of Education student in the University of Alberta Collaborative Middle Years Degree at Red Deer Polytechnic. This is my second year being a member of the Indigenous Perspectives Conference. I very much enjoyed my time last year, I learned so much, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of this committee again this year.  I am very excited to continue learning about Indigenous cultures, and to  be a part of such a wonderful committee, with the opportunity to work alongside such a great group of colleagues.

Tansi and Hello! My name is Kaelan McDonald and I am a fourth-year education student in the Middle Years Program in Collaboration with the University of Alberta. This is my first year being on the committee for Indigenous Perspectives Conference and I am so excited to be a part of this amazing experience! This conference allows you as an individual to grow, but also a chance to grow with your peers alongside you. Why I Got Involved:

Hello, my name is Kaye Tinana, and I am a second-year Bachelor of Education student in the Early Years program. I’m super excited to be a part of the committee for the IPC this year. Knowing the difference I can make as an Educator, I am inspired to gain more knowledge about Indigenous teachings and Truth and Reconciliation. Attending this conference is one of the amazing ways to do that! I am thankful to grow and learn alongside my colleagues and hope to be an advocate of the First Peoples of this land! Oki! My name is Kayl Davies. I am a pre-service education student enrolled in the Middle Years Program in Collaboration with the University of Alberta. This marks my second year as an Indigenous Perspectives Conference committee member. I am very eager to continue my journey in pursuit of Truth and Reconciliation alongside my fellow colleagues. I am confident that this learning experience will allow me to grow as an educator, as well as aid in my personal development. Hi! My name is Kenzie Baker. I am a pre-service teacher in the Bachelor of Education collaborative Middle Years degree. I am passionate about how through inquiry and growth of knowledge, we can commit to journeying through laying the foundation for reconciliation through the eyes of education. I am excited to serve this year as committee secretary for the Indigenous Perspectives Conference and learn alongside my school and community.

Why I Got Involved:

Hey everyone! My name is Lindsey Beamish. I am a fourth-year education student in the last of U of A’s collaborative Middle Years program with RDP. I have thoroughly enjoyed my education journey in Red Deer and really want to make my last year here count.  I participated in the IPC last year and loved the experience. I find inspiration in the resilience, wisdom, and unique perspectives of Indigenous Peoples, and I want to be a part of celebrating and sharing their stories.

Why I Got Involved:

Taanishi! I am Mataya Campbell. I am a third-year education student who is passionate about taking steps toward Truth and Reconciliation. Being considerate of the influence I have in the lives I teach, it is important to actively continue to learn about legacies, uncovered truths, survivor stories, ways of knowing, and recognize the Indigenous generations before us, with us, and after us. I am thankful to have this opportunity of being on the IPC committee as I will gain everlasting relationships and valuable knowledge.

Why I Got Involved:

Tansi! I am Miranja Sameera, a third-year Bachelor of Education Program student following the elementary route. I am extremely excited to be a part of the Indigenous Perspectives Conference. I am always looking for ways to connect and get involved with the Indigenous community. It not only gives me a chance to help the community but also to gain practical experience and knowledge about Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives. Hai hai!

Why I Got Involved:

Hi! My name is Teri Wyatt and I am a third-year BEd Middle Years student. This is my first year on the IPC committee which I have invested into due to my interest in Indigenous ways, history and views. Although I am due to graduate Dec 2024. I would like to assist the IPC to learn, connect and better appreciate Indigenous history and impacts on self and others.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Indigenous Perspectives panel is inviting new members to join us for our upcoming conference in 2024. If you're curious but need more information, you're welcome to attend our meetings.
