Student lists all supranationalism their country is in and provide a current event related to the organization and their country.
United Nations (UN): The UK is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)1: The UK is a founding member of NATO.
Commonwealth of Nations: The UK is a founding member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
World Trade Organization (WTO): The UK has been a WTO member since 1 January 1995.
European Union (EU): The UK was a member State of the EU until 31 January 2020
As for a current event related to these organizations and the UK, a United Nations envoy recently published a report criticizing the UK’s “increasingly severe crackdowns” on environmental protesters. The report highlighted “extremely worrying” information about peaceful protesters facing prosecution under “regressive” new laws, experiencing “harsh” bail conditions while awaiting trial, and being handed jail sentences
How did joining a supranationalism challenged your country's sovereignty?
Loss of Control Over Laws: The EU has its own body of law, overseen by the European Court of Justice. When the UK was a member, it had to abide by these laws, even if they conflicted with its own national laws. This led to situations where the UK had to change its domestic laws to comply with EU directives.
Delegation of Powers: Membership in a supranational organization often involves delegating certain powers to that organization. For instance, the EU has its own Commission (an executive), Council of Ministers (an intergovernmental body), and Parliament. The UK had to share decision-making power with these bodies, which could make decisions that directly affected the UK.
