Inside-out Outside-in from the Unisa Department of Psychology hosted a two-hour long webinar titled Feminist communities of struggle within prisons: Interrogating the carceral state with “criminalized survivors”. The event was hosted by Professor Puleng Segalo with guest speaker Professor Michelle Fine from the City University of New York, a Professor extraordinaire in the Department of Psychology at Unisa, and the Women’s Collective: The Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act. All in attendance were in agreement that this was a very informative webinar that established further directions and further connections for opportunities in creating participatory action research studies and projects in the corrections environment, locally and abroad. Behind bars, in correctional centres around the word, there are forgotten individuals. As part of an already relegated group, members of minority communities who are incarcerated often experience many inequities and biases. Inside-Out Outside-In, as a community engagement project at the University of South Africa (UNISA), along with the Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair, and members from Just Detention International-South Africa, with support from the National Institute of the Human and Social Sciences, present a webinar series that will explore the lived experiences and stories of these communities

Session 3 - Tebogo’s story: A trans woman recounts her experience in detention as a minor

Inside-Out presents a webinar series that will explore the lived experiences and stories of these women. Comprehension of their needs and circumstances can provide critical insight into the development of a correctional environment of empowerment. The four webinars in the series will be presented by well renowned speakers, both local and international, on topics relevant to women in corrections.

Inside-Out, as a community engagement representative of the University of South Africa, in collaboration with the Prison-to-College Pipeline SA project from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Incarceration Nations Network, is hosted an online webinar series for students in Gauteng correctional centres. The four webinars in the series were presented by four well renowned speakers, both local and international, on the topic of justice, incarceration, politics, and education.
