Let us as the Inside-Out community show our support!
Inside-Out, as a community engagement representative of the University of South Africa, in collaboration with the Prison-to-College Pipeline SA project from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Incarceration Nations Network, is hosting an online webinar series for students in Gauteng correctional centres. The four webinars in the series will be presented by four well renowned speakers, both local and international, on the topic of justice, incarceration, politics, and education.
Speakers include Dr Baz Dreisinger, an American academic, cultural critic and activist; Akala, a British rapper, journalist, author, activist and poet; Mbongiseni Mdakane, a researcher and lecturer at Unisa’s Department of Psychology; and Justice David Unterhalter, a Justice of the High Court of South Africa.

Dr Bianca Parry from Inside-Out was interviewed for an article in the Africa Edition of University World News, regarding higher learning in corrections in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the learning activities of incarcerated African students have been seriously disrupted this year as correctional facilities were forced to adjust to COVID-19, Unisa hubs are a possible inspirational model for other centres going forward...

Although 2020 has created challenges for CE projects, one Inside-out member has endeavoured to keep calm and carry on! Through her good relationship with the management at St. Albans Correctional Facility, Ms Jacqui Pirzenthal has managed to continue the distribution of books to the education staff of the St Alban’s Correctional Facility in Port Elizabeth. Well done Jacqui in nearing a total of 2500 books for their library!
On this day, the 100th day of lockdown, we would like to share with you a Unisa article written about Inside-out and the challenges facing community engagement (CE) activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Please read and share with others, as during these difficult times we need to build networks and share innovative ideas to support our communities.
If you want to be involved with any of our online participatory initiatives, or share experiences regarding the corrections community during the lockdown, please do not hesitate to contact us...
Just as many of you are overwhelmed and troubled by the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, so too are those incarcerated in our country’s correction facilities. Social support can go along way in planning an equitable and ethical way forward. To that end, the Prisons and COVID-19: Country Reports brought together leaders in Ghana, Guyana, Kenya, Jamaica, Malawi, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago to talk about the steps that have been and/or need to be taken to protect children and adults detained in police lockups, remand centres and correctional centres as the pandemic spread in their countries. Please see our report on the event, as well as video, for more info...
Dear Inside-Out community members,
The last few turbulent weeks have rapidly passed by, with the impact of the new coronavirus outbreak, COVID-19, being felt in South Africa and all over the world. In these alarming times, the Inside-Out team’s thoughts are with everyone affected by COVID-19, as we all attempt to come to terms with this new reality.
As outlined by the South African Department of Health and National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Unisa is implementing precautionary measures to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. To this end, Community Engagement (CE) teams have been told to strictly follow government and the university’s measures and must not expose themselves or their participating communities to risk.
Despite the uncertainties during this period, what is clear is that the battle against COVID-19 remains a collective responsibility. We appeal to all of you to continue following the personal hygiene guidelines as set out by the WHO and the National Department of Health, to remain calm and act with kindness towards your fellow South Africans until we flatten this curve.
The Inside-Out team remains available for online communication with our community and hopes that we will see each other soon on the other side of this crisis…
Another fantastic year of events and initiatives for Inside-out. For more info, please read the attached document...
