03/08/2021 - In an interdepartmental collaboration Inside-out hosted a three-hour interactive workshop with relevant stakeholders that included students, researchers, correctional officers, and lecturers. The workshop focused on Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) and research in correctional facilities as an option of sustainable investment in and inclusion of marginalised students towards lifelong education and desistance. Experts from the University of South Africa and the City University of New York deliberated on the role of Open Educational Resources (OER) in ODeL, issues of their accessibility and quality, as well as the ethics and equity of working with marginalised students and navigating the ethical and methodological pitfalls when conducting research in corrections. These topical discussions were framed by the overarching theme of ODeL sustainability and accessibility during a global crisis such as the COVID-rd August 19 pandemic, with specific focus on COVID-19 adjustment and wellbeing of incarcerated students. Please see the programme below…

20/05/2021 - We have some news to share of the activities of Inside-Out team members Mbongiseni Mdakane and Jacqui Pirzenthal…
Firstly, Jacqui Pirzenthal shared with us a few photos from the Nkosinathi Foundation/St Albans Art Group handover on Tuesday the 18th of May. The two linked organisations have successfully collaborated which resulted in offenders from the St Albans Art Group making beautiful, practical, and useful materials for the blind and partially sighted children at Nkosinathi Foundation. Robyn Fick, from the foundation, went to collect the articles. We wish this wonderful collaboration all the best in the future, may it grow from strength to strength!
Then, team member Mbongiseni Mdakane, visited Unisa incarcerated female students at Kgosi Mampuru on 28 April 2021 followed by Johannesburg female correctional centre of excellence on 17 May 2021 to access the impact of Covid-19 on learning needs and student support for incarcerated Unisa students. Similar visits are planned for Worcester and Durban Westville female correctional centres later in the year, so please read his report, below...
Thank you again for our team members efforts in the correctional environment during these challenging times.
