The activist group Global Citizen invited the Inside-out Outside-in South African Corrections Interest Group to the premier of NIGHTMARE, a short film about the Criminalization of Poverty across the Globe. Prison-to-College Pipeline Seminar at Unisa
Last week Inside-out at Unisa, in collaboration with Wits and Dr Baz Dreisinger, the Founding Academic Director of the Prison-to-College Pipeline at the City University of New York, hosted a seminar regarding education in the correctional environment. The title of the seminar was “Can a Prison-to-College Pipeline be built in South Africa? Reflections on Higher Education, Incarceration, Re-entry and Access to Opportunity.” Open our Report to read more…
International Women’s Day and Inside-out’s 2018 Focus
Coinciding with International Women’s Day on the 9th of March, the team at Inside-out have decided to make 2018 the year of Women in Corrections. This includes a focus on not only previously and currently incarcerated women, but female correctional officers and officials as well. Mapping of women in corrections on our Wiki page, emphasising a need for research regarding women in corrections, as well as the implementation of new projects in female correctional centres will be just some of the areas of development.
Book Delivery to Losperfontein Correctional Centre
Inside-out recently met with offenders and officials from the Losperfontein Correctional Centre to facilitate a needs analysis and deliver over a hundred books to their library. The warm welcome we received, and constructive interactions had, have inspired a positive working relationship and we look forward to continued support through our Books Project and any new projects to come.
Humanities and Social Sciences Awards for 2018
Last week Thursday, Inside-out team members attended the prestigious Humanities and Social Sciences Awards to celebrate as finalists in the Best Digital Humanities Project for Community Engagement category. We were awarded first runners up, and would like to recognise the worthy winner in our group; Joshua Pulumo Mohapeloa Critical Edition in Six Volumes by Christine Lucia. Congratulations to all the winners on the night, and thank you to the esteemed judges, we were honoured to be considered alongside such a high calibre of finalists who are making significant contributions to the Human and Social Sciences in South Africa.

Human Rights Day 2018 - Mbongiseni on REAL Talk with Anele
This year, in observance of Human Rights Day in South Africa on the 21st of March, team member Mbongiseni Mdakane was invited to REAL Talk with Anele on SABC 3 to discuss life after incarceration and the meaning of rehabilitation and desistance. We are so proud of Bongi, his achievements and all his efforts contributed towards Inside-out. Watch out for Episode 86 in Season 4 of REAL Talk with Anele on SABC 3!
Celebrating our Donors – The Stories behind the Books
There are many people involved in the process of delivering books to correctional centre libraries, and the Inside-out team would like to take a moment to celebrate a major contributor: Ella. So far her generous donations have filled the shelves of correctional centre libraries across South Africa.
Inside-out at the 7th annual Festival of Learning
On the 17th of May 2018 Inside-out Outside-in was invited to attend the 7th annual Festival of Learning hosted by SACAP (the South African College of Applied Psychology) in Johannesburg. Candle Light Day at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre
On the 30th of May, Inside-out attended the Candle Light Day at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria, to show support and advocate for those who have been affected by the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. Those attending remembered the friends and families lost, and the event endeavoured to raise awareness about HIV through past reflections and preparedness for the future, with a focus on education to make a difference. Thank you to Bongi Mdakane, for fulfilling the duty of the programme director, and to Ms Doris Mojapelo for including Inside-out at the event.
emailaprisoner (EMAP) Initiative
During the youth month, the Inside-out team attended a meeting with the emailaprisoner initiative, represented by founder and development manager, Derek Jonas accompanied by Julie Rigby-Brink. The aim of the meeting was to collaborate with Unisa’s Inside-out team in an effort to introduce the emailaprisoner initiative to the Department of Correctional Services.
Nelson Mandela International Day at Kgosi Mampuru II Female Correctional Centre
On the 18th of July 2018, Center Management of the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Center hosted an event to give female offenders an opportunity to celebrate the significance of Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday, though a day of interacting and learning. Attended by the Principal and Vice Chancellor of Unisa, Prof Mandla Mkhanya, the event was organized by members of Inside‐out Outside‐in in collaboration with Chance 2 Advance, community engagement projects at Unisa. Further attendees included members of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Metro Police, who were invited by Unisa to attend the event to facilitate and portray the significance of education through a series of Workshops.
Inside-out Outside-in Women’s Day Event 2018
The Gender Based Violence (GBV) education workshop, which was led by Bongi Mdakane, was warmly welcomed by the DCS representatives and the Kgosi Mampuru male offender residence on the 7th of August 2018. The founder of ‘Mu Duka’, Dr. Mahlogonolo Thobane was present with her team, to introduce the purpose of the workshop and why it was critical to address GBV in our country.
Inside-out at the 24th annual Psychology Congress
Last week, student volunteer members of the Inside-out team contributed to the 24th annual Psychology Congress by volunteering to work with the hosts, the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA). We are so proud of their philanthropic contributions, both to our community engagement group and the congress.
Inside-Out Outside-In at St Albans
Last week, Inside-out team members in the Eastern Cape, Jacqui and Paul Pirzenthal delivered 202 books to the St. Albans Correctional Facility library. They plan to facilitate book deliveries to the women’s correctional facility library in Port Elizabeth soon… Thanks to them for keeping the Inside-out Books Project going strong in the Eastern Cape!!!
Resettlement grant for offenders
Following the announcement of the rejection of the possibility of a resettlement grant for offenders after time served, (read more of News24 article here), Bongi Mdakane shared his first had perspective on the issue as an ex-offender during an interview on the Morning Show SA on eTV. You can watch him share his experiences and passionate supplication in this important interview on the topic.
Women in Criminal Justice
We continue to celebrate the “Year of Women in Corrections” after last month’s symposium at the 24th PsySSA Congress, and so team members were excited to attend a “Women in Criminal Justice” seminar at Unisa. We were most proud of Inside-out Team member Dr Mahlogonolo Thobane, also from the Department of Criminology and Security Science, who gave a heartfelt presentation on strategic career trajectories for women working in the Criminal Justice System.
