We collect books of any language or genre, both fiction and non-fiction, and donate them to libraries in Correctional Centres.
Books allow offenders to participate in the world of civil discourse, ideas, learning and imagination from which they are physically excluded. Books have the potential to morally and intellectually elevate offenders above their confined circumstances and to prepare them for a life after incarceration.
Our main aim is to place books in the hands of offenders. However, we also assist in other ways:
Professional book distribution management to avoid duplication and to track how books are distributed and made use of.
Fostering a sense of belonging to a wider community of readers who value creativity and the world of ideas, whatever a person’s current life circumstances.
Empowerment and skills training by involving offenders and working with DCS staff in managing books and how they are made available to readers.
