I think that scholarly articles typically have a narrow definition of value but that this is seriously limiting. I think that scholarly articles have value if they provide new information or interpretation of previous data that advances people's (scholars' or the publics') understanding of a topic. Even if the hypothesis of a work is not proven it can still have value because it answers a question. Additionally, it is important to acknowledge that the information or ideas presented don't all have to be new for them to have value. There is great value in confirming or refuting previously established findings.
