In this simple but fun game, players take turns in passing a story back and forth. The first player starts by writing the first sentence of the story. The first player then passes the story to the next player who adds the next sentence and passes it to the next player. This continues for an agreed upon number of turns. Players then read the finished story out loud.
Adapted from a classic game called M.A.S.H. that children play to predict their future with funny results. All you need is a dice and a pencil. This game can be adapted into a writing activity by having your child write a story about their future after they complete the game. Click on 'Predict Your Future' for instructions and a game sheet (as well as a blank one to make your own - a further chance for some more writing!).
Categories
Categories is a game where players agree on a category (animals, pizza toppings, types of car) and using a 1 minute timer (or a longer one for older children) see how many words you can write to match the category. Your children can challenge you by choosing topics they are experts on, for example Star Wars characters. This is a game that can motivate your child to write and get over the intial hurdle of putting pen to paper.
Shopping List
Having your child write the weekly shopping list, or doing it with them, provides them with a meaningful and purposeful opportunity to write. This helps them see writing as a useful skill.
Letter Writing
Writing letters can be a fun activity and provides children with an opportunity to write for a purpose. Provide them with fun paper, stickers, colour pencils and/or pens to motivate them to write and decorate the letters they send.
