Maths is a subject that can create a lot of anxiety for students.
Due to its often finite nature (you either get the 'right' or 'wrong' answer) students can become discouraged if they do not obtain the correct answer and will give up raising their hand in class to ask or answer questions.
Confusion over a mathematical concept at the initial stage can lead to a progressive lack of understanding. Students try to learn new ideas on a 'shaky foundation' of initial understanding and this results in compounding their difficulties.
The best ways you can help to support students in school and at home is through:
Number games and activities to help them with rapid recall of math facts (this will make multi-step processes such as long multiplication a lot easier!)
Logic and reasoning games to help them with their conceptual reasoning in math
Manipulating numbers through all these games boosts their confidence and willingness to try mathematical problems. Confidence is key!
