Online Resources

Iredell County has a rich military history. Thousands of residents have served over the centuries and their descendants are left with a variety of ways to research these military backgrounds. Physical reminders such as memorials and monuments are scattered throughout the county. Genealogy websites like Ancestry and FamilySearch have many databases that are helpful. The National Archives also have official military records, some of which has been digitized and is available online.

Additional Online Resources

  • Fold3- The largest online host for reliable information on military records. Fold3 is a paid subscription site but access is also granted through certain Ancestry packages.

  • Revolutionary War, Tarrant's Tavern (Carolana)- Although this skirmish took place in what is now Iredell, in 1781 it was still part of Rowan County. This source provides a list of names of men who served in the Rowan militia.

  • Civil War Diary of the Lebanon Greys (Wake Forest University)

  • North Carolina, Confederate Soldiers and Widows Pension Applications, 1885-1953 (FamilySearch)- Soldiers who were wounded in battle and widows as a result of the war were eligible for certain pension benefits from the government. This FamilySearch database allows you to search by name or location.

  • Iredell County World War I Memorial (UNC)- This monument lists the Iredell County men who were killed in action during World War I. It was dedicated in 1928 and is currently located at the Iredell County Hall of Justice in Statesville.

  • Iredell County World War II Memorial (UNC)-This monument lists the Iredell County men and women who were killed in action during World War II. It was erected in the 1970s and is currently located at the Iredell County Hall of Justice in Statesville.

  • Iredell County Korean and Vietnam War Memorial (UNC)- This monument lists the Iredell County men and women who were killed in action during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. It was erected in the 1980s and is currently located at the Iredell County Hall of Justice in Statesville.

  • Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)- This is a membership based club for females who can trace their line to Revolutionary War patriots in their family tree. They also help preserve historic landmarks in their communities. The local chapter in this county is responsible for the preservation and promotion of the Fort Dobbs historic site.

  • National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR)- This membership club is for men who can trace their line to Revolutionary War patriots. Although not as active in Iredell County as the DAR, this group serves the same purpose nationwide.

Indexes

  • Burial Locations of Military Veterans in Iredell County- This is a database listing the burial locations in Iredell County of men and women who have served in the military. The database shows those buried from the mid-1700s to the year 1999. This index is incomplete and is an ongoing project of the Local History Department at the library.

  • Revolutionary War Soldiers- Abstracted from the above index, these are only veterans who served during the Revolutionary War from Iredell and Rowan Counties.

George D. Sherrill was a private during the Civil War and wrote letters home like most soldiers. The library has digitized these letters, many of which were written to his future wife. These images are available on the library's Flickr account.
