Maps, Property, and
Land Records

Map of Fourth Creek Congregation (what is now Statesville), 1773

Knowing the lay of the land during your genealogical research is so important. The Iredell County of 1788 looked very different from the Iredell County of 1847 when it was splitting off to form Alexander County. Both of those versions look even more different than the present-day Iredell. Knowing how much land your ancestors owned can tell you a lot about them. Sometimes, land records can tell you that your family ran a large farm or were wealthy. Many deeds also list landmarks on properties that can help create a picture of what the area looked like at the time.
