研究歷程
當1994年我接到第一批罹患蝦白點症的蝦樣本時,雖然未曾有從事甲殼動物的相關研究經驗,不過本人於1986年到美國研習的桿狀病毒/昆蟲細胞真核表現載體系統的經驗,讓我能立即切入探究這一重挫全球經濟的養殖蝦類新興疾病。當時我很快就解決了蝦體黏液及DNA分解酵素干擾的問題,成功地純化出致病病毒。同時在三年內即發表4篇ISI高引用論文。我的研究由從初期研究水生無脊椎動物病毒性疾病(白點症)爆發的特性及機制開始,再而深入研究致病原的基因體及分子特性,最近則專研蝦的防禦機制和宿主-病原體之交互作用等。研究成果促使1. 全球對蝦疾病、海洋病毒及其他病原體的獨特性的重視;2.養蝦產業(苗場及養成場)生物安全上的運作的改革;3. 蝦白點症致病原-白點症病毒成為新病毒科Nimaviridae的模式物種;4.海洋無脊椎動物與病原互動及的防禦機制的研究受到學術界重視。
本人前瞻研究工作並不侷限於病毒本身,目前已延伸至致病機制和防疫措施的探究。最近本人除了繼續研究宿主-病毒交互作用外,亦從事另一重要快速擴散的蝦類新興疾病-急性肝胰腺壞死病(Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease, AHPND)。急性肝胰腺壞死病的致病原為海洋副溶血孤菌(Vibrio parahaemolyticus),相關研究成果發表在 “美國國家科學院院刊”,闡釋這種常見的海洋伺機性細菌因新獲得一個攜帶致死毒素基因之質體,進而轉變成毒力強大的病原體。
本人及團隊在蝦類疾病的突破性基礎研究成果及前瞻疾病控制技術在蝦類養殖產業上的應用,備受國內及國際肯定。目前本人實驗室是世界動物衛生組識(OIE)之蝦白點症(WSD)及急性肝胰腺壞死症(AHPND)參考實驗室。25年間共發表160篇以上的期刊論文,總引用次數超過8,662次(h-index: 50),並且在國際會議受邀演溝達四十次以上。因研究表現受到肯定而使本人榮獲許多重要獎項:例如國科會傑出研究獎、教育部學術獎、教育部終生國家講座、吳健雄基金會傑出女科學家獎及東元獎。
