This presentation is a two-part presentation. The first session will provide an overview of culturally responsive practices in the classroom, its history in adult education, as well as examine ways that culture, identity and bias affect the field of ABE. The second, subsequent, 45-minute session will explore how to use the Participatory ABE Curriculum Unit Toolkit, developed by Erin Cary, as a form of culturally responsive teaching with adult learners. Participants will gain a basic understanding of strategies to build learning partnerships with adult learners as well as how to become a culturally responsive practitioner.
