I am ABE Curriculum

What is #IamABE?

#IamABE is a 3 lesson standards-aligned curriculum, developed at three different levels, geared towards Adult Basic Education students. Designed to be easily implemented in any classroom, lessons and materials are available at the beginning, intermediate, and Advanced/GED levels.

Lessons range from understanding First Amendment rights, to voicing one's political opinions on social media. This project based curriculum builds towards launching a social media campaign to elevate student voices.

Beginning

First Amendment

  • explore 5 parts of the 1st amendment
  • CASAS style assessment practice
  • explore historical movements in the U.S.

Refuting Stereotypes

  • discuss stereotypes people have about students' communities
  • write "I am" statements
  • self-assessment rubric

Privacy Settings

  • discuss social media platforms students use
  • set privacy settings
  • share "I am" statements
  • online assessment

Intermediate

(CASAS 200-220)

First Amendment in Practice

  • connecting protest to the first amendment
  • discuss the Montgomery bus boycott
  • compare/contrast historical protests with current events

Resisting Stereotypes

  • define stereotypes
  • connect stereotypes to civil rights movements
  • identify ways that citizens criticize the government
  • write a legislator concerning a topic of personal interest

Privacy Settings

  • identify privacy settings
  • identify the pros and cons of using social media
  • refute a stereotype
  • develop and share #IamABE statement


Advanced/GED
