About On Nut, travel, cats, and everything else that makes life worth living...
I spent some hours in Nonthaburi, at The Mall Lifestore at Ngamwongwan, I had dinner at the Japanese restaurant Yayoi; Chicken with rice, Miso Soup, Kimchi and 8 pieces of sushi, who didn't want to be in the picture. Incredibly good and I wonder why I haven't tried that restaurant; Yayoi is a chain that is everywhere but maybe it's mostly because I don't usually have much left over for chains; Whether it's restaurants or cafés. And it was good food and very affordable.
Song of the day!
I'm a big fan of Arty Ficial, it's "my music".
So, today's song will be
"Can You Keep a Secret" from their latest album "Love Don't Rust".
I had a light dinner at Ozone One Market; A very nice market mostly a lot of food and live music every night. It is not far from Don Muang Airport. Papaya salad, small "isan" sausages and a lovely evening without the rain that I thought would disturb my peace of mind.
I left Cha Am just after 12 o'clock on Sunday to drive 215km to Bangkok. As usual, I stopped at PTT in Don Tako. Excellent food for a cheap price and it has become a bit of a must to plan a food stop there. With Arty Ficial in the speakers, the journey is much easier. Normally I look forward to a few days in Bangkok with all my friends but this trip I do a bit against my will; My heart and gut feeling say it's wrong, but the car is going to a workshop, and I have a doctor's appointment. So, I will make the best of the situation; Gary, Bruce, Frank and I are thinking about doing a day trip to Ayutthaya by train a few days before Gary leaves for Payao on Saturday and I go back to Cha Am.
No, KFC is not for me.
I left Cha Am yesterday, and I already miss it.
Time with you...
Gary and I were at the Pine Heart Squirrel Café for a Shwarma at lunch and the guy sitting at the table next to me looked at me suspiciously the whole time. It was probably my shirt that he didn't like.
Cha Am, Tuesday.
If you are a bit lethargic in the morning after a night out to celebrate birthdays, I managed 2 parties, then you can treat yourself to breakfast outside the home with a clear conscience. It's lucky that there are professionals who make sure you don't starve to death.
First Khao Man Gai at the woman who has been in the market for many years, at least the 15 years that I have had the pleasure of visiting it
Then to the beach for a long, 60 minute, walk. Which was as much needed as the breakfast.
Birthday dinner with my best friend, a couple of days after my birthday but it didn't matter much. At Oosombat Garden on Beach Road. I haven't been there since they opened a few years ago. There have been a few changes and it has only gotten better. After dinner we met some friends at a cool little bar for a couple of drinks before I headed home. Full, satisfied and content.
Sometimes I find myself buying things mostly for the sake of buying. For example, this watch. Which I found at Moshi Moshi in Hua Hin for 179baht. But I couldn't resist the clock. You might wonder why I went into the store at all. But now I did. And bought the clock. So, I must live with that. It hangs on the wall above the dining table in the living room. And ticks; "Tick, tick, tick” sounds. All day and probably at night too but then I sleep and it's in the bedroom upstairs, so I don't hear the ticking. The only time I hear the ticking is in the morning when it's completely quiet around me and I'm drinking coffee. Then I am reminded of the presence of the clock, and the time. And I think it's a pleasant sound, this ticking. But it disappears quickly when all the neighbors have woken up and the street is buzzing with normal life. But in the morning, when no one else is awake, it's just the clock, the coffee and me.
It's high time for me to get a new mirror. Definitely. Coffee at The Fragrance today.
Så är det.
Klipp dig och skaffa dig ett jobb.
This coffee is as fresh as it gets; delivered to me yesterday, June 12th and roasted at the Look Chau Suan roastery on the outskirts of Chiang Rai on June 10th. It is an excellent coffee that needs no shame. I prefer dark roast coffee but this roast makes me curious to order a bag of their dark roast coffee. Nice foam on the surface, not much acidity and good flavor.
Everything can be solved; if you, like me, have a minimal kitchen but you know you're a genius.
There is a small coffee festival going on at Blurport in Hua Hin so I got on the train to pay a visit there and maybe buy some good coffee to take home with me. I treated myself to a walk from the train station to Blue Port via Soi 80 which is just as fun during the day as it is in the evening. Although not as lively...
I bought 250g of whole beans of this dark roasted coffee from "Robusta Kaffeprodukter" in Ban Pa Mak. They had quite a large selection of different coffee products. I note that "Drip coffee" seems to be very popular. Not least after looking around a bit among exhibitors and vendors.
A selection from Gong Coffee, which has farms and a roastery in Gong Valley, Kra Buri, Ranong Province.
The coffee was exactly to my taste; a dark roasted Robusta that I really liked. Of course I bought a bag with me. The beans were roasted 2 days earlier.
The festival is on until Sunday and there are different events all the time about coffee, equipment, etc. I'm going there again on Saturday.
Of course, I ate some food too.
After a few hours in Phetchaburi I took the train to Hua Hin, it has also become a bit of a Sunday tradition, for some food and maybe a little shopping. Now there wasn't much shopping but I did have time for food anyway, food that didn't want to be in the picture. But I also had time for a long walk and some pictures at the train station; the old one and the new one.
Another day of action. I took, as usual I could say, the train in the morning to Phetchaburi. Or "Petbuli" as the guy at the ticket booth at the station in Cha Am usually says. I was 8 baht poorer for that one-way ticket for a train ride that takes about 30 minutes. This day was like every other day I go here but with a few small variations. I have my favorites but find new places every time I'm here.
There is a small cafe halfway between the train station in Phetchaburi and the "Old Market" called "Six in the Morning". On Saturdays and Sundays they open at 09:00!
Considering the way the door looks, it is definitely a good place to enjoy a good coffee or a bite to eat.
At the Old Market there is a hole in the wall where a family cooks Khanom Thang Taek or "Poor Man's Pancake".
Of course I bought some with me so I could have something sweet with my afternoon coffee.
Both the cat and I got food, the cat even got its food served. I had to pay for everything and get my food myself.
At the temple across the river at Old Town Market they have a new guard. They say he's a real tough guy.
The cheerful girl who bakes delicious bread with different fillings. I bought "Ham/Cheese" and it's delicious. The bread will be ready in an hour. You have to stay ahead because it goes fast.
Of course, I bought a "Ham/Cheese" loaf to take home with me.
After Chicharras it was time for the second can of coffee from Kobler Roastery in Bangkok; This coffee is also lightly roasted and has a completely different aroma. Buena Vista, the beans come from Honduras. It also had a completely different taste than Chicharras and didn't taste bad, but it's not a coffee to my taste.
There was a nice foam on the surface and the coffee tasted good, the first was a Ristretto. How it turns out with a "regular cup" I'll get back to.
Update: I admit that this coffee, which does not taste bad, is not a coffee to my taste.
Today was the premiere of the coffee that I ordered from Kobler coffee roastery in Bangkok. I am used to drinking dark roasted coffee and have had difficulty with weaker coffee. But since I bought my coffee machine, my interest in other varieties than what I usually drink and some other roasts has awakened. Now I am trying my hand a little cautiously and will try a few different varieties of this coffee that comes from Mexico; I will try Ristretto, Espresso and "Regular" black coffee. I will also tinker a little with the grinder and see if it makes a difference if I grind the coffee a little coarser or finer. This coffee is light roasted, I will not boast with borrowed feathers and babble about how the beans smell or how the coffee tastes but I will note that coffee does not have to be dark roasted to be good; This coffee was definitely outside my comfort zone when it comes to coffee but it was very good and I have many wonderful coffee moments to look forward to.
And there came my new Airfryer, quickly handled by Central and DHL. I couldn't resist the offer on Central; I've been looking for a bigger Airfryer for a while but I don't want to pay a lot for it. With bonus points and a 15% HBD discount it came to 2882 baht and it was impossible to resist. But you'd think a bag of fries would be included in the purchase...
I think a company as large and reputable as Tefal could spell my name correctly.
I got two cans of coffee delivered to my house today. It will be really exciting to try this coffee and see if it tastes as good as when I drink it at The Fragrance here in Cha-am. Update: it is not the same coffee that I drank at The Fragrance. Same roastery but not the same beans.
My new headphones, which have really good sound for the money, I had to go to the store myself to buy them because the online store announced that they were sold out.
2999 baht and money well invested.
Thank you and goodbye to my JBL headphones that have worked great for a little over 4 years with good sound but which unfortunately seem to have suffered from some form of dementia.
Every day, almost every day, I listen to an artist or a band that I haven't listened to since my teens or at least since I was younger. And today, the turn has come for David Lindlay who was an avid player on the stereo, there are probably a few vinyl records left; however, they are in the care of his descendants now. But he, together with El Rayo-X, can be found on Spotify and YouTube!
From Wikipedia: David Perry Lindley (March 21, 1944 – March 3, 2023) was an American musician who founded the rock band El Rayo-X and worked with many other performers including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Curtis Mayfield and Dolly Parton. He mastered such a wide variety of instruments that Acoustic Guitar magazine referred to him not as a multi-instrumentalist but instead as a "maxi-instrumentalist." On stage, Lindley was known for wearing garishly colored polyester shirts with clashing pants, gaining the nickname the Prince of Polyester.
Today's dinner: Som Tam Thai and 2 boiled eggs. A good combo that gives a lot and still ensures that I don't gain weight.
It's a bit of a tradition that I celebrate "The last Monday before the weekend" and this Monday was no exception; I went to Kaew's Café for a bite to eat. Together with the others in the "We Made Cha-Am Great Again" group, we celebrated the last Monday before the weekend and everything was amazing; the weather, the food, the beer and the company. And of course, Kaew was great too!
Bam cooked fish which she came and gave to me. Okay, the homemade food cost 80 baht and it is money well invested.
